From the roaster:

Back in the early 90’s we journeyed from the North of Italy to the South tasting literally hundreds of espressos from the most famous coffee bars of Italy. Just like culinary tastes, espresso preference also change from region to region. In Northern Italy we experienced the lightest roasted espresso blends, and in the Southern regions we found the darkest espressos. In Rome, medium roasts are preferred. We think a fine, medium roast applied to full bodied, excellent beans produces the best espresso. This is enough roasting to fully develop all of the natural acids and oils to produce a red, syrupy crema. This roast also develops the sugars into a caramel richness without any burnt or dark flavor. Urth Italia is our Roman-style blend producing a syrup red crema, roasted hazelnut, chestnut, apricot and spice, and a long finish.

Urth Caffe's Italia espresso roast is an outstanding chocolate forward, Italian style espresso with all the good dark notes, including smoky, earthy, and some clove spice, but balanced and smooth with regards to bitterness and a touch of acidity (I agree with apricot). It has some natural sweetness.

I also had it as cold brew and it was very smooth and chocolatey (I maybe would have liked a bit more acidity for a cold brew, but many will love this).

I recommend Italia as a thoughtful blend with many countries of origin and beans! It's a great example of the alchemy a roaster can do.

More Details

Roast Level: Medium Dark
Medium-dark or Vienna roast coffee features a deeper, richer flavor profile due to its longer roasting time. When selecting a Vienna roast, look for a lower acidity, bolder body, and flavors with dark chocolate, caramel, toasted nut notes, and mild smokiness.
Bean Source Country: International Blend
International blend coffee refers to a blend of coffee beans sourced from different regions or countries worldwide. International blends combine beans with distinct flavor profiles and characteristics, resulting in a harmonious and complex cup of coffee. The quality of an international blend depends on the expertise of the coffee roaster, who carefully selects and combines beans to achieve a specific flavor and balance. Roasters who excel in crafting international blends have a deep understanding of the different growing regions, varietals, and processing methods.
Organic
Organic coffee is produced without synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides, herbicides, and artificial fertilizers. Instead, organic coffee farmers rely on natural and sustainable agricultural practices like crop rotation, composting, and biological pest control. To be labeled as organic, coffee must meet strict regulations and certification criteria set by governing bodies, such as the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) or the European Union (EU). Organic coffee not only supports environmental sustainability but may also offer health benefits, as it contains fewer chemical residues than conventionally grown coffee.
Espresso
Espresso is a concentrated coffee beverage brewed by forcing hot water through finely-ground coffee beans under high pressure. It is characterized by its rich flavor and distinctive crema—the creamy layer that forms on top of the extracted process. When evaluating espresso, coffee experts often focus on key tasting characteristics such as aroma, flavor, body, and aftertaste. Aroma refers to the fragrant smells released during brewing, while flavor encompasses the coffee's overall taste profile, including notes of sweetness, bitterness, acidity, and richness. Body refers to the coffee's texture or mouthfeel, with descriptors like full-bodied, medium-bodied, or light-bodied. Aftertaste, or the finish, pertains to the lingering flavors and sensations experienced after swallowing the coffee. A well-prepared espresso is prized for its balance and complexity, combining these sensory attributes into a harmonious whole.
