Urth Caffe's Italia espresso roast is an outstanding chocolate forward, Italian style espresso with all the good dark notes, including smoky, earthy, and some clove spice, but balanced and smooth with regards to bitterness and a touch of acidity (I agree with apricot). It has some natural sweetness.

I also had it as cold brew and it was very smooth and chocolatey (I maybe would have liked a bit more acidity for a cold brew, but many will love this).

I recommend Italia as a thoughtful blend with many countries of origin and beans! It's a great example of the alchemy a roaster can do.

Urth's cold brew is very nice. It's a bit on the darker side with big chocolate forward notes. It doesn't have much acidity for a cold brew, which some will like, but it's very smooth and easy to drink. Where with most cold brew you expect acidity it goes earthy/nutty.

Enjoyable medium dark roast that is very smooth with some natural sweetness, and a bit of peanut/walnut. Very chocolate. A bit of smoke appears at the end and lingers on the palate. Best characteristic is the smoothness.

Definitely NOT a light roast, but a good darker one.

While this coffee has good values and drinks OK as a dark roast, I can't give Urth Caffe a pass for calling it a light roast.

They are not light roast as they are clearly cracked and oily. It's probably fair to call it a Medium-Dark or Vienna Roast.

That said, I got a good result when I ran it through the espresso machine IF you assume it's a Vienna Roast. Smooth, chocolatey, nice medium crema with dark roast characteristics, a touch of smoke and clove.

I think Urth Caffe reminds me of a lot of places I've been in Los Angeles restaurant and cafe-wise. It's a bit eclectic, frenetic, and trying to satisfy everyone. It's not clear labels used elsewhere apply. Maybe they are saying this is lightly roasted compared to their other darker roasts. Enjoy the Urth Caffe experience means embracing that spirit.

It ended too bitterly for me and wasnt as complex as I would have liked. Almost had a woody taste to it.

Each sip opens with a light sweetness, moves to hints of caramel and chocolate, but unfortunately ends with a pervasively bitter finish. I don't recommend this roast for cold brew. I am curious to see if a different brewing method would depress the bitterness.

Editor's Overview

Over three decades ago, Urth Caffé was the vision of Jilla and Shallom Berkman. In 1989, their path crossed with a dedicated coffee grower, Jorge, from a Peruvian farm that cultivated organic, heirloom coffee. Jorge's commitment caught the Berkmans' attention, leading them to learn about the harmful methods prevalent in coffee production, which rendered coffee one of the most heavily chemical-treated foods globally. Notably, heirloom coffee trees, which are a rarity, have remained untouched by genetic modifications. This revelation inspired the Berkmans to lead the way in offering health-conscious coffee.

Urth Caffe encapsulates the diverse and creative atmospheres I've encountered in various Los Angeles cafes and restaurants, exuding a sense of social awareness and somehow urbane crunchiness. With a menu of drinks and food so expansive, it's ambitious to expect every item to hit the mark, but the place thrives on its eclectic and high-energy ambiance. Traditional classifications don't necessarily apply here. While not every visitor may find their perfect dish or drink, everyone will be happy they came with the right attitude. To relish the Urth Caffe experience is to welcome its quirks. -Ted Chan, Managing Editor
