This coffee has some excellent characteristics and some unpleasant ones. Let's start with the good.

A balanced and bright jasmine note that you don't often see in Kenyan coffee. A very nice melon note pointed out by the roaster is definitely present. I'd say I got cantaloupe more than honeydew, but maybe they're not that different ha ha.

On the other hand, there is a bit of a tannic mouth feel that is pretty unpleasant. It can be diluted out with ice, which is what I used most of these beans for. But this makes the coffee cloying on the palate and a bit sour without bring brightness.

It also has a bit of a savory/tomato overtone that is not quite restrained enough. I used to get that in Kenyans more and this is the first one I've had in a while that I've had it.

Speedwell is a roaster I like and this is the 1st cup of coffee from them I haven't really liked. Not sure if it's just a one off or the issue I sometimes see as roasters get bigger the sourcing is not as good.

Cupping Method:About this bag at Nan's in Stow, MA. I tried different v60 and Chemex approaches.

More Details

Roast Level: Light Medium
A Light Medium Roast coffee, sometimes referred to as a "City Roast" or "American Roast," lies between a light and medium roast. This roast level strikes a balance by preserving the coffee bean's unique characteristics while allowing for a moderate development of body and flavor. The beans have a medium brown color, exhibiting a slight sheen of oils, providing a more balanced and nuanced flavor profile. A Light Medium Roast typically highlights the coffee's inherent fruity, floral, or citrus notes, while also providing some of the deeper, richer flavors associated with medium roasts.
Bean Source Country: Kenya
Famed for its bold, bright acidity and fruity, wine-like flavors, Kenyan coffee often features blackcurrant, citrus, and tropical fruit notes. The high elevations, volcanic soil, and meticulous processing techniques contribute to the consistent, high-quality beans, with SL28 and SL34 among the most esteemed varieties.
