This is a magnificent espresso blend at the medium-dark level. It has a nice acidity and florality. A touch of bergamot. It's syrupy with a great medium crema and very pleasant mouthfeel. Very nice mouthfeel.

This roast is almost dangerously good.

I could not stop drinking a large pot of pourover I made. It was super smooth and fruity. I got summer strawberries, black tea, and brown sugar.

Then I pulled it as espresso and it was also incredible. Floral, complex, massive, lively crema. A touch nutty, blackberry and a long lingering finish.

Cupping Method:Very freshly roasted direct from the roaster.

Wow, I don't add any sweetener to coffee, so I really notice when a roast is sweet... and this was very sweet! The sweetness, paired with an unusually strong coffee flavor, makes this extremely drinkable. There was a bit of a light chocolate/nutty/citrus undertone. I'm ranking this coffee 5 stars, even though there is less acidity than I prefer, because it is really that good and I also give Del's bonus points for supporting Fair Trade arrangements with organic certification.

Definitely get the chocolate and orange (maybe orange blossom?) flavors here, like the old-school chocolate ball you would get for Christmas and crack into wedges. I think that is the most characteristic description of the Colombian medium roasts I've had. Very smooth and almost creamy mouthfeel. I don't get a lot of acidity or complexity, so that's the trade-off.

This Ethiopian was very flavorful and smooth with red berries, a little bit of white grapefruit, and brown sugar with black tea as the overarching platform. For me, I'd actually like a little bit more acidity still.

I liked this both as espresso and pourover but maybe not as much as Ted!

Really pleasant with a nice swirl of flavors, almost a little nutty at one point. I would definitely buy this one again!

This is probably ever so slightly an overroast for a medium, as I can see a sheen on the beans. However, it drinks like a chocolately medium with a little bit of smoke and good acidity, and low overall bitterness.

As espresso it's chocolate, a touch of smoke, and blackberry with good balance. A little bit of spice.

As pourover, it's very smooth with a dark milk chocolate character. The acidity is pretty muted, but it's smooth enough so there's good balance. I had it with an Portuguese egg tart and they went fantastic together.

Editor's Overview

We paid Del's an in-person visit Phantom Gourmet style at their roastery in Waltham, MA, just a few miles from the Coffee Roast office. We do that because it's awkward if we don't like the coffee. Luckily, that wasn't a problem. We tried 4 different fresh roasted coffees and came away very impressed. Del is meticulous and scientific about his roasting, and borderline maniacal about freshness. Most of the coffee is fair-trade and organic. As with many microroasters we discover, we don't know whether they will keep their quality as they scale, but it's fantastic coffee for now.
