Description: The challenges of working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo can be staggering. However, so is the potential to produce high-quality coffee in this central African nation. Buchiro—produced by the Muungano cooperative—enjoys an excellent position to produce coffee with fantastic quality. This organic coffee comes from the Buchiro washing station, found on the serene shores of Lake Kivu. Rich volcanic soils, local Bourbon varieties, and breathtaking elevations converge in this selection to bring vibrant flavors of limeade, kiwi, and black tea.

This is a balanced, easy-to-drink light roast with some unique character and some complexity. It has a strong black tea character, a nutty kick (almond?), and then a tropical fruit late palate and a clean finish.

More Details

Roast Level: Light
Light roast coffee is a delicately roasted coffee that retains more of the beans' natural flavors and characteristics. Light-roasted coffees have bright acidity, complex fruit, and floral notes. Light roast coffee does not have less caffeine than darker roasts because caffeine levels remain stable during roasting.
Bean Source Country: Democratic Republic of Congo
Congolese coffee, grown predominantly in the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is known for its vibrant acidity, medium body, and complex flavors. The fertile soil, high elevations, and diverse microclimates of the region contribute to a unique flavor profile that includes fruity, floral, and chocolatey notes.
Bean Source Region: Kivu
The Kivu Lake coffee growing region, located along the picturesque shores of Lake Kivu in the African Great Rift Valley, straddles the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This area is renowned for its rich volcanic soil, high altitude, and ideal climate, which create the perfect environment for cultivating premium coffee beans. The region's Arabica coffee plants, grown at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 meters above sea level, benefit from the perfect combination of warm days and cool nights, allowing the coffee cherries to develop slowly and enhancing the beans' flavor profiles. The coffee from the Kivu Lake region is cherished by connoisseurs worldwide for its exceptional taste, characterized by bright acidity, complex fruity notes, and a distinctively velvety mouthfeel.
Organic
Organic coffee is produced without synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides, herbicides, and artificial fertilizers. Instead, organic coffee farmers rely on natural and sustainable agricultural practices like crop rotation, composting, and biological pest control. To be labeled as organic, coffee must meet strict regulations and certification criteria set by governing bodies, such as the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) or the European Union (EU). Organic coffee not only supports environmental sustainability but may also offer health benefits, as it contains fewer chemical residues than conventionally grown coffee.
