Editor's Overview

La Colombe Coffee Roasters, originally known as La Colombe Torrefaction, is a well-known coffee roaster and retailer based in the United States. The company, founded by Todd Carmichael and JP Iberti in 1994, began with its first location near Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia. Over the years, it has expanded to include cafés in various locations such as Philadelphia, New York, Washington D.C., Austin, Boston, California, and Chicago, amongst others.

It was Todd's adventuring on Dangerous Grounds that caught Coffee Roast Managing Editor Ted Chan's eye. It quickly became one of his favorites for its single-origin storytelling. The company has been a notable representative of the third wave of coffee, being one of the early pioneers of direct trade coffee sourcing. This involves dealing directly with farmers to ensure high-quality products and fair trade practices.

In 2015, Hamdi Ulukaya, the founder of Chobani, bought a share of the company, assisting in its plans for expansion. This marked a shift for La Colombe - it moved towards large-scale distribution and became more blend focused. The brand is now an innovator in the convenience space, including a canned version of the Draft Latte, a cold-pressed espresso and frothed milk latte.
