I can’t stress enough the importance of maintaining a clean water filtration system for plumbed systems.
The frequency of sanitation and flushing depends on several factors. For instance, the type of water filtration system you’re using, the volume of water passing through it, and the local water quality (especially hardness) all play crucial roles. However, as a general rule, sanitizing and flushing your system as frequently as possible is worth it.
Flushing the system after each use is essential for basic daily maintenance for some systems. It ensures your water’s cleanliness and prolongs your filtration system’s lifespan. I do a deeper clean with a full backflush every 3 to 6 months.
Deep cleaning prevents germs, mold, and scaling. Depending on the usage intensity, aiming for a deep clean at least every six months is a good starting point. However, suppose your system experiences heavy usage or notices signs of contamination, such as unusual tastes or odors. In that case, increasing the frequency of deep cleanings or fully changing the filters is advisable.
Germs and mold thrive in damp environments, making water filtration systems susceptible to microbial growth if not properly maintained. Also, scaling, caused by mineral deposits in hard water, can clog filters and impede water flow, affecting the performance of your system and the quality of your coffee.
Additionally, backflushing your system can be an effective method of maintaining its performance. Backflushing involves reversing water flow through the system to dislodge and remove trapped particles and contaminants. Regular backflushing in your maintenance routine can help ensure your filtration system remains clean and efficient.
